Ah, the typical Father’s Day: sizzling hunks of meat on the grill, a cold beer and maybe a tumbler full of his favorite whiskey. Meanwhile, mom gets showered with flowers and chocolates and breakfast in bed for her special day. Poor guy.

But your dad, without a doubt, has more character than a beer commercial. This year, skip the typicals and consider making him one (or more) of these classic Father’s Day cocktails for his own special day. Whether he’s playful, sophisticated, a film or book buff, there’s something here for every kind of dad.

After all, mixing a drink for someone is always more special than tossing them another beer. While it’s easy to do, the thought and effort behind the gesture show you really do care. It’s these kinds of gestures that make the best memories. And what better way to compliment your dear old dad than to craft him a cocktail he won’t soon forget?

        White Russian:

The classic White Russian is a cocktail that every dad will love. While it’s been around since the ‘60s, this drink was brought into the mainstream by Jeff Bridge’s character, the Dude, in the cult classic, “The Big Lebowski.” If your pops is the laid-back sort who likes a good movie, he’ll definitely appreciate one of these decadent drinks for his Father’s Day shindig.

        Ingredients

        2 ounces vodka

        1 ounce Kahlúa

        1 splash heavy cream

        Instructions

Add the vodka and Kahlúa to a tumbler with ice. Pour in the heavy cream on top and stir, or serve as-is for a nice visual effect.

        The Hemingway Daiquiri:

Got a father that likes books more than movies? He’ll certainly appreciate this daiquiri named after the famous novelist. According to legend, the famous writer would throw several of these back while sitting in his favorite bar in Cuba. White rum, maraschino liqueur and the juices of grapefruit and lime come together to make a drink that’s tropical, strong and almost too easy to drink.

        Ingredients

        • 2 ounces of white rum
        • 1/2 ounce maraschino liqueur
        • 3/4 ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice
        • 1/2 ounce of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
        • A lime wheel for garnish

        Instructions

Add everything into a shaker filled with ice and shake until nice and chilled. Straight into a coupe glass and garnish with the lime wheel.

        Forefathers:

This appropriately-named cocktail is a modern twist on the Old Fashioned. Perfect for the fathers who refuse to acknowledge that they’re the least bit old-fashioned in their sensibilities, this is a drink that pairs tradition with a little modern sophistication. A typical Old Fashioned with the pizazz of peach bitters and a hand-crafted sweet tea oleo Saccharum, it’s almost as satisfying to make as it is to sip.

          Ingredients

          • 2 ounces of your favorite bourbon
          • 2 tablespoons of sweet tea oleo Saccharum
          • 3 dashes of peach bitters
          • Orange peel for garnish

          Instructions

To make the sweet tea oleo Saccharum, peel 4 lemons and 2 oranges and add the peels to a plastic bag. Add 2 cups of sugar and toss to coat. Remove all the air from the bag, seal it and then let it sit at room temperature for 24 to 48 hours.

Next, pour the mixture into a saucepan and add 1 1/2 cups of your favorite unsweet tea. Cook over medium heat for about 15 minutes until the sugar dissolves and a syrup forms. Chill the syrup until you’re ready to make the drinks.

When you’re ready for your cocktail, pour all the ingredients into a mixer with ice and stir until cold. Strain into an Old Fashioned glass over ice and garnish with the orange peel.

          Rum and Smoke:

Among the many Father’s Day cocktails, this particular recipe is a chance to truly show dad what a terrific job he’s done in raising a person of class and sophistication. This cocktail blends rum, sherry, bitter liqueur and involves concocting your own smoked-rosemary simple syrup. This drink is incredible, and the flavor has endless layers of character—so much so that your dad will undoubtedly be convinced that you’re moonlighting as a mixologist. He doesn’t need to know how truly simple it was to make.

            Ingredients

            • 1 1/2 ounce of aged rum
            • 3/4 ounce of sherry
            • 1/4 ounce of bitter liqueur
            • 1 tablespoon of smoked-rosemary simple syrup
            • A flamed rosemary sprig for garnish

            Instructions

Combine 1/2 cup of water, 1/2 cup sugar and the zest from 1 orange in a saucepan over medium heat and stir gently until it just starts to boil. Using a lighter or a kitchen torch to light a sprig of rosemary until it starts smoking. Drop the flaming spring into the saucepan, add a lid and let it all steep for about 20 minutes. Strain out the rosemary and set it aside.

Add all the ingredients into a mixer with ice and stir until chilled. Straight the mixture into a tumbler with fresh ice, garnish with a freshly-flamed rosemary sprig and serve.
