Cox’s started with two partners and a work ethic shaped by local retail roots.
In July 1995, Billy Grantz and Tom Kupper opened the first Cox’s Louisville location. Over the next 28 years, Cox’s grew to 26 Louisville-area locations. Billy and Tom each brought 40+ years of experience in successful retail operations, and their story traces back to 1980, when they worked for a local family-owned drug store chain called Otto Drugs. Otto Drugs was owned by their fathers, Charlie Grantz and Irvin Kupper, and the business emphasized what still matters most today: taking care of customers and taking pride in being local.
As Cox’s evolved, the focus expanded toward liquor, wine, and beer, while maintaining the neighborhood-service mindset that customers expect when they walk through our doors.
In 2020, Billy and Tom began the retirement process with a clear priority: protect the people who helped build the business. They chose to sell the company to its employees—making Cox’s and Evergreen Liquors a 100% employee-owned and operated company.
