Top Ginger Ale Cocktails: What Liquor Pairs Best (Tequila · Rum · Whiskey · Vodka) Wed, Jan 28, 2026 We love a good underdog story. If you asked us to name one cocktail mixer that is underrated, we’ll answer the same way every time: Ginger. Ale. We know — your grandma always had it in her cabinet for when you had stomach aches, and maybe your uncle liked to sip his whiskey with a can of ginger ale in it. But, like many of us, ginger ale has lived many lives. And if there’s one cocktail mixer that is affordable, pantry-stable, and supremely versatile, it’s classic ginger ale. Ginger ale cocktails are refreshing, a little bubbly, and can range from sweet and light to bold and punchy…because when clients come into our stores and ask what liquor goes well with ginger ale we are very tempted to say, “Just about all of them.” It’s true. Why Ginger Ale Is a Great Cocktail Mixer History matters, and as purveyors of liquors and spirits, we love the stories behind the bottles. In this case, ginger ale evolved from its cousin, ginger beer. While ginger beer came first (as early as the 1700’s in England), ginger ale became the star spin-off in the 1860’s when it was reinvented in Ireland as a lighter, sweeter, carbonated drink. It really hit star status when Canadian pharmacist, John McLaughlin, perfected his version in 1907 — Canada Dry. We said it once and we’ll say it again: Ginger ale’s beauty is its versatility. Seriously, you could pick almost any liquor to mix with ginger ale, and you’d be able to find a ration that just…works. Part of it is ginger itself. Lightly spicy, refreshing, and softly herbal, ginger has been used across cultures, continents, and time. While today’s ginger ale doesn’t have much of the actual root in it, it still boasts that calming flavor. Partnered with light, bubbly carbonated water and comforting sweetness…a ginger ale cocktail becomes the perfect pairing for spirits, and an easy-to-drink option for nights when you don’t want heavy cocktails or too many fancy add-ins. This guide is your key to using ginger ale in a variety of ways, with a variety of flavors. What Liquors Pair Best with Ginger Ale Here’s the perfect moment for our usual mantra: The best ginger ale and liquor pairing (or cocktail, beer, etc.) is the one you enjoy drinking. That said, we love a good guideline. This cheat sheet is exactly what we tell our customers…and it’s a great answer when you find yourself considering, “what liquor goes best with ginger ale?”. Tequila and Ginger Ale Tequila is a natural dance partner for ginger ale. Look for tequilas that are light, and slightly herbal or oaky — usually a reposado. They’ll carry notes of vanilla, caramel, and add complexity to your tequila cocktail recipe. Ginger ale does its part too: the sparkling bubbles and sweetness balance the natural viscosity of tequila…all this means you get a darn good drink. Rum and Ginger Ale Rum brings the tropical vacation vibes, and ginger ale keeps things light and fresh. We recommend light or white rum for a sweeter-leaning mix with ginger ale. Think “summer cocktails” or “tiki drinks” and you’ll be right in line with rum and ginger ale classics. Whiskey and Ginger Ale As Kentuckians, we’re partial to this pairing. If they seem like a bit of an odd couple, hear us out: Whiskey shows up with its leather and tobacco spiciness, and gives the ginger ale something warm to balance. Ginger ale cuts through the natural heat of whiskey or bourbon and mellows it, highlighting whiskey’s sweet, oaky, vanilla notes. Together they taste less “mixed drink” and more like a clever creation. Vodka and Ginger Ale If there’s a more neutral spirit in the liquor universe, we haven’t met it yet. Vodka’s easy clarity lets the ginger ale shine; you can’t find a more pure and popular combo for low-effort cocktails. Gin and Ginger Ale Crisp and clean, this leans a little more adventurous, thanks to gin’s herbal, floral notes. A gin and ginger ale mix can be a great base for creativity — give the botanicals something to talk to when you introduce a squeeze of lemon or lime, a fresh sprig of rosemary, or a dash of bitters. Any of these simple additions whip up a totally new flavor profile…and make you look like one smart bartender. How to Choose Ginger Ale (vs. Ginger Beer) & Why It Matters Say it with us: Ginger ale and ginger beer are not the same. Ginger ale, on the whole, tends to be lighter, sweeter, and bubblier because it’s carbonated water and sweetened ginger flavoring or syrup. Ginger beer gets its fizz from the fermentation process — sometimes with extra carbonation added at the end — and is spicier, bolder, and occasionally contains real ginger. Ginger ale vs. ginger beer is actually a fascinating history that goes back all the way to the 1700’s. But we’ll keep it fresh here… When to use ginger ale in a cocktail: Ginger ale gives you a smoother, more approachable cocktail. For recipes that call for mild flavor, like a refreshing highball, a summer cocktail, or a sweeter punch, reach for the ginger ale. When to use ginger beer in a cocktail: For spicy or bolder drinks like a Dark N’ Stormy, ginger beer is your go-to. Whereas ginger ale is sometimes used to soften a drink, ginger beer’s fermentation gives a deeper, richer flavor that plays well with strong ingredients and adds a little kick to your cocktail. Pro tip: You can substitute ginger ale for ginger beer in a bartending emergency…just know the flavors are milder, much sweeter, and weaker, so certain cocktails may taste diluted or overly sweet. Test it out in small amounts first. We like to keep a pantry-friendly ginger syrup on hand for times such as these. You can pour some into a little soda water or Sprite to craft your own potency, then mix it into your cocktail. Here’s one of our personal favorites: ginger syrup for cocktails. Tips for Mixing & Serving Your Ginger Ale Cocktails Use good-quality ginger ale (opt for real ginger flavor if possible). Keep it simple — many drinks only need one spirit + ginger ale + ice + citrus garnish. Adjust the strength by varying your spirit-to-ginger-ale ratio. Serve cold, with plenty of ice — carbonation and ice make any drink more refreshing. Liquor and ginger ale. They just go well together.
